Hello! I Grad school is over, my lease is up soon, and my schedule is wide open. I am planning on moving to Seattle in July with my girlfriend (her company has another office there, so she can transfer) and I’m looking to work as a research biologist, environmental consultant, environmental advocate or some mix of those. I’m open to anything.

I just finished my MS in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins Univeristy and have a BS in Wildlife Bilogy from Ohio University.

I have worked in Alaska, Arizona, and Florida while in school (summers) and am a big backpacker/camper/hiker. I’ve stayed at least one night in all the states except Hawaii. For the sake of my sanity, I knew I had to live out West and I love the Pacific NW……

Anyway, I’ve searched for jobs through all the standard listings and websites and was wondering if anyone knew of “green” environmental companies who do conservation or policy work in the Seattle or Bellingham area? Thanks!!!

What would be the cheapest way to get from SEA-TAC airport to George, WA?

I’m planning on going to the Sasquatch music festival in George, WA on Sunday and Monday, and I live in Southern CA. I was checking taxi rates, and I don’t want to spend $250 getting to George from the Seattle/Tacoma airport. Anybody know any better alternatives, besides renting a car (I’m 18, and nobody’s gonna rent to me)?

Whats a good place to live in Seattle?

Hi everyone! I am looking to go to med school at U Wash in Seattle. Suggestions open on that, but I am looking for a place to live. A commute isn’t bad if it opens up more open and affordable places to live. I will be on my own, but will bring my car w/ me to seattle. I don’t mind small towns, but I don’t really want to drive an hour every day either to get to town, but if the place is perfect I will. I am from Texas, and use to the conservative suburbs, knowing the inner city is much more liberal, kind makes me want to shy away from that area. I just want to be comfortable, since its a big move. Not afraid of the cold, have lived in the arctic circle of sweden and rainy england for a time. Really excited about the move and school, but I really like areas near the outdoors where I can escape easily and just as simply get to work, restaurants, movie theaters, etc. Will be 21 at time of move, so other young people or young family areas would be nice. Thanks for all the help!!!

I’m applying for a grant (that I probably won’t even get) to work in the US and as part of the application, I have to decide which cities I would prefer to work in if they chose me.

Basically, I have a list of 20 cities/geographical areas, and I have to pick my top 3.

Problem is, I’ve never been to any of these cities, so I don’t know which ones are “better”. Which would you recommend and why?

Cities with big airports nearby are a plus. Also, I don’t drive so it would be great if it had a good public transport system.

I’m from California but I’m up in Seattle for a few days trying to get a lease for when I move up in September (for school). I’m a full time student without a job or previous rental history but I do have more than enough money to pay a full years lease, which from what I’ve seen is about $9,000-$12,000. What’s the easiest way to find an apartment? I keep calling places and leaving messages and sending e-mails but I don’t get replies…Is there a rental agency I can use or something? I’d like to get a lease right away.

I’m planning a small trip to Seattle, WA and I was surprised to see that a car rental for 4 days costs $400 !!!

Since i’ve never been to Seattle, I was wondering if there is any bus/metro that runs from the Airport to the city and how efficient is the public transportation if i want to see just the most important/famous areas.

I WOULD take the actual Amtrak train but they only go to Vancouver once, early in the morning. So it doesn’t fit with my schedule.

In a few weeks, I will fly in to Seattle for the weekend to attend a wedding. My plane arrives at 10:45 Friday night. I was thinking of getting a hotel near the airport for the night and then drive up to Whidbey Island on Saturday morning. Is traffic bad on I-5 during that time?
Reason for the late flight is because I have to work on Friday.

Using ORCA card with transfer — does the travel direction matter?

I’m coming to a meeting in the greater Seattle area in a few weeks….flying into Sea-tac and staying near the Bellevue Transit Center.

I know I could take the Sound Transit 560 Express bus to the Bellevue Transit Center [done that a few times], but now that the Central Link light rail reaches Sea-tac, I want to try it out. Therefore, I plan to take the light rail from Sea-tac to the Int’l District/Chinatown stop, then take the Sound Transit 550 Express bus to Bellevue Transit Center. I won’t be in a real hurry that day so if it takes a little longer, that’s not a problem.

I have an ORCA card [currently zero-value; mailed away for it before the end of the year]. From what I understand, it’ll let us transfer from the light rail to the Sound Transit 550 Express bus, because the fare on both is the same ($2.50 per person).

Would the transfer be allowed? I ask because in some transport systems, tranfers are only allowed going in the same direction. In my case, we will be going northbound on the Light rail to the Int’l District/Chinatown stop, then southbound-eastbound on the 550 Express bus to the Bellevue Transit Center.

Paying $2.50 extra isn’t a problem, but I just want to be sure I add enough onto the ORCA card at the airport…because later in the week, we’ll be taking the 550 bus back into Seattle, and there’s no place at Bellevue Transit Center to add more money onto the ORCA card.

Cell Phone Usage While Driving – $285.00 (cell phone usa ge (until January 1, 2008, you can use a hand held cell phone while driving, but if a police officer observes a driving infraction, he can stop you and cite you for both. After January 1, they can stop you for cell phone usage w/o any other cause and must now be done with ‘hands free’ device. Law Enforcement has been told to really start cracking down on this, as the accident rate is increasing due to cell phone use.

Cell Phone Usage in a Construction Zone – $570.00
(This fine is doubled from the regular $285.00)

Passengers over the age of 18 not in a seat belt – Both the passenger AND driver with get tickets of $124.00

DUI – Instant ARREST! The courts are now placing DUI’s on your driving record for a period of 10 years!)

Last but not least – You know that there was a thought that you cou ld go at least 5 MPH over the posted speed limit, well according to the WA. State Patrol, you are now allowed 3 MPH over!

So, watch your speed my friends!

We’re going to Seattle the last week in March for about a week. We’re staying pretty much downtown, by the paramount, and are planning on doing the zoo, aquarium, emp, sam…I’m just looking for more ideas along the lines of places to eat, beaches that are close to town, shopping…any ideas from locals with toddlers. We’re just coming from Spokane, so we sort of know the area and will have a car. Thanks.

I live in Southern Colorado and I plan to move to the Seattle-Tacoma area. My family and I own three cars but I can only tow one and my family will drive the SUV, but my SUV cannot tow the family minivan (weak SUV I know). Is there a legit company that can ship a minivan to Seattle?

I am moving from Seattle to MT in a couple months, and was wondering the best way to do it. I have a 2 bedroom apt, and a car that I will be taking with me. No living stiuation in MT yet, but I’m thinking just getting an apartment with a short lease for starters. I don’t have a ton of money saved, and will be moving by myself in Decemeber, so it might be tricky driving over the winter passes in a u-haul pulling my car! Was just looking for some advice…
